Exmoor
Dog Friendly
2hrs from Bristol

Perched on the edge of a valley, Russell is your front-row seat to the beauty of Exmoor and the South West. Wake up to panoramic views of alpine forests that surround the cabin. With limited signal, Russell offers a truly off-grid experience. Watch the resident sheep graze, spot birds swooping through the valley, and witness some of the best stargazing in the world, thanks to Exmoor's 'Dark Sky Reserve' status. You might even meet the super-friendly dog (also named Russell) who resides on-site!

Best experienced if you have a car, you can explore the neighbouring Exmoor National Park only 10 minutes away or head 30 minutes by car to the North Devon coast, with hidden coves and great beaches. Plus England’s only off-grid pub, The Poltimore Arms, is just a 10 minute drive away—no WiFi, no distractions, just great ale.

This fully equipped off-grid cabin has everything you need for a digital detox, including a phone lockbox and instant camera. There's also a hot shower, gas hob and all the kitchen equipment you'll need.

Dogs are welcomed at Russell, but please note that the area around the cabin is not enclosed and there are free-roaming sheep and chickens nearby. As such, we ask that your dog is kept on a lead at all times. Please also be aware that the friendly farm dog (also named Russell!) is also known to stop by and say hello to guests, so this cabin may not be suitable for those who are afraid of dogs, or for those with reactive dogs.

Our highlights

Our fave hidden highlights in the area

Woolacombe Beach

Award-winning Woolacombe Beach is widely recognised as one of the best beaches in the UK. Located near little cafes and shops, this 3-mile sandy beach is perfect for a leisurely stroll whilst watching the local surfers taking on the waves. It's dog-friendly too!

Saunton Sands

A vast, golden beach with epic sand dunes, perfect for long walks or soaking up the sea air. It's also a popular surfing spot with lessons running in high season. The nearby Saunton Break Cafe does a mean bacon sandwich, with a side of sea views.

Heddon’s Mouth

One of Exmoor’s most stunning coastal walks, this riverside trail or circular winds through ancient woodland before opening onto a dramatic hidden cove with rugged cliffs and crashing waves.

Exmoor Forest Inn

A cosy country pub in the heart of Exmoor, serving up seasonal dishes made with local produce. Think roaring fires, craft ales, and some of the best pub food in the area—perfect after a day exploring the moors.

The Poltimore Arms

England’s only off-grid pub, this old-school gem is the perfect place for a pint and a chat with the locals. No WiFi, no phone signal— just a memorable experience and a belter of a landlord called Steve that you can read more about here.

Watersmeet Tearoom

A beatifuful National Trust beauty spot where two rivers meet in a deep woodland gorge. Walk along the rushing water, keep an eye out for otters, and stop for a cream tea at the historic tea room.

Valley of the Rocks

The Valley of Rocks, just west of Lynton, is famous for its herd of goats and unusual rock formations. The valley extends on to the Lee Abbey Estate which has wooded walks, and a small lane leads down to Lee Bay, a sheltered sandy beach popular for kayaking and wild swimming.

You can travel to Russell via car or public transport (train and short taxi ride).

After booking your chosen cabin, you’ll receive an online ‘Welcome Guide’ detailing the exact location of the cabin and directions by car or train and taxi. If you’re travelling by train, we highly recommend booking your connecting taxi in advance, as rural locations don’t tend to have Uber!

Russell is on a private hillside farm in a secluded spot. However, when you arrive you will need to pass the landowners home so you may see the locals as you head to and from the cabin. They also have a very friendly dog that loves to say hello, but this may not be suitable for reactive dogs.

The cabin is your space to relax in any way you like to, but we’ve kitted it out with lots of phone-free activities, including:

📚 A selection of our fave books
👾 Board games
🃏 Diary of CEO Conversation Cards
📻 Radio Cassette Player + Tapes
📸 Instant Camera + 10 free films
🗺 Map and compass

And of course you might want to head out and explore the local area. The map and welcome guide include recommendations of restaurants, cafes and other attractions nearby.

Check-in is at 3pm
Check-out is at 10am

We don’t currently include food packages, but all cabins have a well-equipped kitchen including a mini-fridge and gas hob to cook up your fave meals. We include pots, pans, cooking utensils and even chef knives. Plus, loose leaf tea, coffee beans, oil, salt and pepper. If you’re looking for a night or two away from the stove, there’s always plenty of nearby pubs and restaurants listed in our cabin guides.

Yes! All our cabins have hot showers and an eco-composting toilet in an indoor bathroom. We provide eco-friendly toiletries and luxury towels, too!

Yes! Our cabins are perfect for a solo digital detox. Russell is on private land and is lockable from the inside and outside and the landowner is very friendly and lives nearby. We're on hand on cabin support if you need us too. If you want to chat ahead of your stay to ease any anxieties or plan your trip, you can book in a call with us here

We include enough firewood for your first night stay. You can add full log store access to your booking for £20 on checkout, which includes firewood, kindling and firelighters.

There is limited to no signal in the immediate area around the cabin, so this is a true off-grid experience. You should be able to get reception a little further walk away from the cabin and the landowner lives on site if you need anything urgently.

We recommend you unplug for the full duration of your stay to get the most from your digital detox, but this is totally self-policed. Our lockboxes have a padlock and key, with the key in a sealed envelope, so if you want to unlock it, you can.

We provide you with a Nokia so you can reach our cabin support team and contact friends and family if you need to. The number for the Nokia will be shared with you in advance of your stay.

All our stays are 3 or 4 nights as this is the minimum time it takes to fully switch off and reap the benefits of nature and time offline. You can read more about 'The 3 Day Effect' here.

We know plans can change, so we’ll always do what we can to accommodate booking amendments. If your check-in date is over 28 days away, your stay can be rebooked for a new date or you can request a voucher, or a full refund. If your check-in date is within 14-28 days, you can move your stay to a future date, or request a voucher equal to the payment you have made. Cancellations or amendments are unfortunately not possible if your check-in date is in or within 14 days. All bookings have a 48 hour cooling off period, so if you change your mind you can reschedule your stay or get a full refund. Rescheduled stays are non-refundable.
