Gruff

South of London

West Sussex
Dog Friendly
1hr30 from London
Free wine tasting

Gruff is tucked away in the heart of West Sussex, surrounded by peaceful woodland and just a stone’s throw from a beautiful local vineyard. Despite only being just over an hour from London, you’ll feel a world away - fully immersed in nature from the moment you arrive. The views from the picture window are quintisentially British and you might spot the occasional deer or pheasant. Gruff is also twinned with his neighbour, Basil, making him a brilliant choice for solo travellers, friends, or families who want to share an escape without giving up a little personal space.

Gruff is a great option for those wanted to explore the local area by foot. Kinsbrook Vineyard in within walking distance and has an amazing restaurant and farmshop. Guests of Unplugged also get a free wine flight to taste during your meal.

Inside, Gruff has everything you need for a true digital detox. There’s a hot shower to warm up after long countryside walks, a gas hob for cooking up something hearty, and all the kitchen essentials you could need. You’ll also find a phone lockbox and an instant camera - so you can unplug, unwind, and capture your favourite moments the old-fashioned way.

Dogs are warmly welcomed at Gruff, though the area around the cabin isn’t enclosed. For their safety (and the local wildlife’s) we recommend keeping them on a lead while exploring.

🚗  1hr 30 drive from South London
🚂  1hr 10 train from Victoria Station

Our highlights

Our fave hidden highlights in the area

Kinsbrook Vineyard

Kinsbrook Vineyard is a laid back vineyard, eatery and farm shop featuring incredible local produce and seasonal dishes. Book a group tour or pop in to pick up a coffee and sweet treat. Plus, Unplugged guests get a free wine flight with lunch or dinner!

Pub Trips

The Rising Sun is just an hour's walk from the cabin through easy-to-navigate country lanes. It has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere - perfect for enjoying a drink and a phone-free conversation.

Local walks

Whether you're getting ready to hike, cycle or trail run - Thakeham has a vast area to explore. They are perfect for little feet, paws, walkers and outdoor enthusiasts of any skill level.

Wiston Estate

Just a 10 minute drive from Gruff you'll find the Wiston Estate. Take a tour of the vineyards, indulge in a wine tasting, or dine at their restaurant Chalk, which was recently added to The Michelin Guide.

The Pig (South Downs)

The Pig are famous for their '25 mile menu' - what they can't grow in their kitchen garden, they source from suppliers within a 25 mile radius of the restaurant. Just 20 mins from Gruff (by car or cab), we highly recommend booking in for a leisurely lunch and a wander around the grounds.

FOR GROUPS AND FAMILIES

Our cabin duo

Gruff and his twin cabin, Basil, are located on the same farm, sharing opposite corners of a large sloping meadow. Perfect if you want to be surrounded by nature but feel reassured that other guests are nearby, or for staying with friends and family. When inside Gruff, or sat outside, you cannot see the other cabin or its outside area.

You can travel to Gruff via car or public transport (train and short taxi ride).

After booking your chosen cabin, you’ll receive an online ‘Welcome Guide’ detailing the exact location of the cabin and directions by car or train and taxi. If you’re travelling by train, we highly recommend booking your connecting taxi in advance, as rural locations don’t tend to have Uber!

Gruff is in the same meadow as his brother cabin, Basil. The cabins are about 70m apart and separated by hedgerow, so although you're close by, you won't be able to see other guests when inside or outside the cabin. You may however catch a glimpse of the other cabin when walking in and out of the meadow.

The cabin is your space to relax in any way you like to, but we’ve kitted it out with lots of phone-free activities, including:

📚 A selection of our fave books
👾 Board games
🃏 Diary of CEO Conversation Cards
📻 Radio Cassette Player + Tapes
📸 Instant Camera + 10 free films
🗺 Map and compass

And of course you might want to head out and explore the local area. The map and welcome guide include recommendations of restaurants, cafes and other attractions nearby.

Check-in is at 3pm
Check-out is at 10am

If you'd prefer to head off a little later on your final morning, you can purchase late check-out for £25, giving you until 12pm to depart. This is only available to those departing on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

We don’t currently include food packages, but all cabins have a well-equipped kitchen including a mini-fridge and gas hob to cook up your fave meals. We include pots, pans, cooking utensils and even chef knives. Plus, loose leaf tea, coffee beans, oil, salt and pepper. If you’re looking for a night or two away from the stove, there’s always plenty of nearby pubs and restaurants listed in our cabin guides.

Yes! All our cabins have hot showers and an eco-composting toilet in an indoor bathroom. We provide eco-friendly toiletries and luxury towels, too!

Yes! Our cabins are perfect for a solo digital detox. Arwen is on private land and is lockable from the inside and outside. We're on hand on cabin support if you need us too. If you want to chat ahead of your stay to ease any anxieties or plan your trip, you can book in a call with us here

We include enough firewood for so you can keep warm and toasty during your stay.

We recommend you unplug for the full duration of your stay to get the most from your digital detox, but this is totally self-policed. Our lockboxes have a padlock and key, with the key in a sealed envelope, so if you want to unlock it, you can.

We provide you with a Nokia so you can reach our cabin support team and contact friends and family if you need to. The number for the Nokia will be shared with you in advance of your stay.

All our stays are 3 or 4 nights as this is the minimum time it takes to fully switch off and reap the benefits of nature and time offline. You can read more about 'The 3 Day Effect' here.

We know plans can change, so we’ll always do what we can to accommodate booking amendments. If your check-in date is over 28 days away, your stay can be rebooked for a new date or you can request a voucher, or a full refund. If your check-in date is within 14-28 days, you can move your stay to a future date, or request a voucher equal to the payment you have made. Cancellations or amendments are unfortunately not possible if your check-in date is in or within 14 days.
