Gruff is located in beautiful West Sussex and close to a beautiful vineyard. You'll feel submerged in nature despite being just over an hour from London. Gruff is twinned with Basil, which makes him a perfect choice for solo travellers, friends or families who want time away but don't want to be too far from others.

This fully equipped off-grid cabin has everything you need for a digital detox, including a phone lockbox and instant camera. There's also a hot shower, gas hob and all the kitchen equipment you'll need.

Dogs are welcomed at Gruff, but please note that the area around the cabin is not enclosed so dogs must be under supervision and on-leash for their own safety and that of the surrounding wildlife.

Benefits of saunas

Location

Thakeham, West Sussex

Gruff is nestled in the countryside, but not too far from necessities like local shops and pubs. Surrounded by fields and trees, you can take a walk to the local Kinsbrook Vineyard for a supper club, wine tasting or dinner.

🚗  1hr 30 drive from South London
🚂  1hr 25 train from Victoria Station
🚕  14 minute taxi from Billingshurst Station

Gruff is in the same meadow as his brother cabin, Basil. The cabins are about 70m apart and separated by hedgerow, so you won't be able to see other guests when inside or outside the cabin.

Pub Trips

The Rising Sun is just an hours walk away from the cabin through beautiful country lanes. It has a very pleasant ambience for enjoying a drink over a phone-free conversation.

Local walks

Whether you're getting ready to hike, cycle or trail run - Thatcham has a vast area to explore. They are perfect for little feet, paws, walkers and outdoor enthusiasts of any skill level.

Kinsbrook Vineyard

Kinsbrook Vineyard is a laid back vineyard, eatery and farm shop featuring incredible local produce and seasonal dishes. Book a group tour or pop in to pick up a coffee and sweet treat. Plus, Unplugged guests get a free wine flight with lunch or dinner!

FOR GROUPS AND FAMILIES

Our cabin duo

Gruff and his twin cabin, Basil, are located on the same farm, sharing opposite corners of a large sloping meadow. Perfect if you want to be surrounded by nature but feel reassured that other guests are nearby, or for staying with friends and family. When inside Gruff, or sat outside, you cannot see the other cabin or its outside area.

You can travel to Gruff via car or public transport (train and short taxi ride).

After booking your chosen cabin, you’ll receive an online ‘Welcome Guide’ detailing the exact location of the cabin and directions by car or train and taxi. If you’re travelling by train, we highly recommend booking your connecting taxi in advance, as rural locations don’t tend to have Uber!

Gruff is in the same meadow as his brother cabin, Basil. The cabins are about 70m apart and separated by hedgerow, so although you're close by, you won't be able to see other guests when inside or outside the cabin. You may however catch a glimpse of the other cabin when walking in and out of the meadow.

The cabin is your space to relax in any way you like to, but we’ve kitted it out with lots of phone-free activities, including:

📚 A selection of our fave books
👾 Board games
🃏 Diary of CEO Conversation Cards
📻 Radio Cassette Player + Tapes
📸 Instant Camera + 10 free films
🗺 Map and compass

And of course you might want to head out and explore the local area. The map and welcome guide include recommendations of restaurants, cafes and other attractions nearby.

Check-in is at 3pm
Check-out is at 10am

If you'd prefer to head off a little later on your final morning, you can purchase late check-out for £25, giving you until 12pm to depart. This is only available to those departing on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

We don’t currently include food packages, but all cabins have a well-equipped kitchen including a mini-fridge and gas hob to cook up your fave meals. We include pots, pans, cooking utensils and even chef knives. Plus, loose leaf tea, coffee beans, oil, salt and pepper. If you’re looking for a night or two away from the stove, there’s always plenty of nearby pubs and restaurants listed in our cabin guides.

Yes! All our cabins have hot showers and an eco-composting toilet in an indoor bathroom. We provide eco-friendly toiletries and luxury towels, too!

Yes! Our cabins are perfect for a solo digital detox. Arwen is on private land and is lockable from the inside and outside. We're on hand on cabin support if you need us too. If you want to chat ahead of your stay to ease any anxieties or plan your trip, you can book in a call with us here

We include enough firewood for your first night stay. You can add full log store access to your booking for £20 on checkout, which includes firewood, kindling and firelighters.

We recommend you unplug for the full duration of your stay to get the most from your digital detox, but this is totally self-policed. Our lockboxes have a padlock and key, with the key in a sealed envelope, so if you want to unlock it, you can.

We provide you with a Nokia so you can reach our cabin support team and contact friends and family if you need to. The number for the Nokia will be shared with you in advance of your stay.

All our stays are 3 or 4 nights as this is the minimum time it takes to fully switch off and reap the benefits of nature and time offline. You can read more about 'The 3 Day Effect' here.

We know plans can change, so we’ll always do what we can to accommodate booking amendments. If your check-in date is over 28 days away, your stay can be rebooked for a new date or you can request a voucher, or a full refund. If your check-in date is within 14-28 days, you can move your stay to a future date, or request a voucher equal to the payment you have made. Cancellations or amendments are unfortunately not possible if your check-in date is in or within 14 days. All bookings have a 48 hour cooling off period, so if you change your mind you can reschedule your stay or get a full refund. Rescheduled stays are non-refundable.
